All surgeries have risks and complications. Several types of body contouring procedures, such as a tummy tuck, are considered major surgery. Some can be done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. But they are still considered surgery and carry some risks.
Different types of body contouring surgery can be combined and performed at the same time. A person can undergo a tummy tuck and have liposuction on his or her hips at the same time, for example. Combining surgical procedures is done all the time and is usually quite safe, but it can increase the risks of a complication.
Surgical complications can and do happen. Complications during and after body contouring surgery can include allergic reactions to the anesthesia, infection, excessive scarring, or dissatisfaction with the results of the procedure.
