Liposuction is often performed as a same-day procedure, where you go to the surgeon’s office, free-standing clinic, or hospital, have the procedure and go home that day. Your surgeon will give you a detailed list of instructions to follow in the days after your procedure.
You will have some pain, bruising and swelling after the surgery, but this should subside within a few weeks. If the pain becomes extreme, contact your surgeon. Using cold compresses on the treated areas can minimize swelling and bruising. Your surgeon may instruct you about this.
The incisions where the cannula was inserted may appear leaky or may drain fluid in the days after liposuction. Your surgeon will tell you what to expect as far as drainage and what to watch out for.
Liposuction patients are advised to begin walking around as soon as possible, but to avoid strenuous activities for about a month
You will need to wear a liposuction compression garment over the treatment area after liposuction. This is a garment similar to a girdle and will help to control swelling. It will also assist your body in healing according to the newly defined tissue contours. Some surgeons provide these garments and others tell you where you can buy them. If you are buying them yourself, do that in advance of your surgery.
