What is an otoplasty?
An otoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair abnormalities or cosmetic problems of the external ear. It should not be confused with surgery to the hearing mechanism of the ears, the middle and inner ear. An otoplasty can improve the appearance of ears that are too large, stick out too far, or that are misshapen.

How is an otoplasty performed?
An otoplasty can be performed in a surgeon’s office or a freestanding surgical clinic, but may be done in a hospital for a very young child. General anesthesia is used on children younger than eight, while light sleep anesthesia is preferred for procedures done on older individuals. The incisions are generally made behind the ear or within the natural folds and curves of the ear structure, so there are no visible scars after the operation. During most otoplasties, the surgeon will reshape the cartilage of the ear. At the end of the operation, a dressing will be placed around the head to hold the ears in their new shape and reduce swelling.

What should I expect postoperatively?
Dressings are usually removed after 5 to 7 days. Children should be kept relatively quiet during that time. The dressing should not get wet. After the dressing is removed, an elastic headband should be worn at night for up to 6 weeks to protect the ears. Normal activity may be resumed 2 days after otoplasty surgery. Routine exercise and activity is allowed after 4 weeks following otoplasty, and contact sports are generally allowed after 6 weeks.
Is otoplasty quite painful? Is there much bruising?
Most people who have had otoplasty say the pain was moderate. Most swelling will subside after a week and a half, but the ears will remain sensitive to the touch for about 3 weeks. Bruising and pain is minimal in most cases.

At what age can an otoplasty be done?
Unlike most cosmetic procedures, otoplasty procedures are commonly done on young children. The ear has reached most of its adult size by age 4 or so, and surgery can be done at that age.

When will I be able to see the results of cosmetic ear surgery?
Follow your doctor's instructions and remove the bandages only when instructed. You can expect to see an immediate difference in the shape of the ear.
What are the risks of otoplasty?
The risks of the operation are bleeding and infection. Both are exceedingly rare. With proper postoperative care, otoplasty is a very safe operation with little risk, good results, and little discomfort from the operation.
The ears may feel numb for 2 to 3 months after surgery. Sensation returns slowly over that time.
