BLEPHAROPLASTY RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

As with all surgery, there are risks to blepharoplasty and possible blepharoplasty surgery complications. These risks include general medical complications, such as infection, a bad reaction to anesthesia or excessive loss of blood, as well as risks specific to eyelid surgery, such as eye problems, as well as the risk of your being dissatisfied with your results.

With blepharoplasty, there is the small chance that the cornea of your eye could be scratched during surgery, when your dressings are changed or your eyes are examined. Corneal scratches are very painful, but generally heal quickly. Your vision may be a bit blurry for a few days after surgery, but this is normal and should resolve. You may also be sensitive to bright light for a while.

It is possible to lose sensation in the skin around the incisions. Temporary loss of skin sensation near the incisions is normal, but it can be permanent in some cases.

Because the eyelids on both sides of your face will be surgically altered, there is the possibility that your eyes may not match as closely as you want. Your eyes may heal at different rates, so sometimes this mismatch will even out. If the mismatch is serious, you can talk to your surgeon about further surgery to correct this.

More serious complications of blepharoplasty include an inability to close one eye or both eyes completely or an eyelid that is flipped outward or gapes (called ectropion). Both conditions may need to be corrected surgically. Difficulty in closing the eyes or keeping them closed may be temporary as the eyelids heal. If it is permanent, it can lead to dry eyes and difficulty sleeping.

As with any cosmetic procedure, there is the possibility that you will not be happy with the results. You must have realistic expectations of how your eyes will look after your surgery. Make sure to discuss how you want to look with your surgeon before your surgery.
