What is gynecomastia?

What causes gynecomastia?
Although no underlying cause for gynecomastia or breast growth in men is found in most cases, the condition can be a symptom for a more serious disease. A man may develop breasts or “man boobs” because of a hormonal imbalance that is caused by liver disease, pituitary problems, or excessive drinking. Gynecomastia is also a side effect for several medications, including anabolic steroids, and due to excessive use of alcohol and marijuana.

However, many cases of gynecomastia occur in young men who are going through puberty. Puberty is a time for many changes in the body and a young man may develop ”male boobs”. This glandular tissue may shrink in size after a year or two, or it may remain. Development of breasts can be emotionally devastating to a young man, and he may avoid situations where he has to take off his shirt, such as the beach or locker room.

Can’t I just diet away my "man boobs"?
Sometimes, but not always. Being overweight or obese is a contributing factor to developing breasts or “man boobs”. The excess fat on the upper chest may also form pseudogynecomastia, which is fatty tissue that looks like breasts. Losing weight is a good place to start dealing with gynecomastia, but even severe weight loss will not cause overdeveloped breast tissue to disappear.

What is male breast reduction?
Male breast reduction can be done with liposuction, surgical removal of breast tissue, or a combination of both. When breast tissue is removed surgically, the incisions are usually around the nipples or under the armpits.

How long after my surgery before I can return to sports?
You will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks after your male breast reduction surgery. Your surgeon may also advise you to avoid any sports where you might be hit in the chest for longer than that.

Will there be scarring after male breast reduction?
There will be some. If liposuction is done, there will be a few small incisions. With surgical removal of breast tissue, the incisions will be made around the nipple or in the armpit, where they should be relatively unnoticeable.

When will I be able to see results of gynecomastia removal surgery?
You will be swollen for about a week after your male breast reduction surgery. When the swelling goes down, you should be able to see what your new chest looks like.
