Male Breast Reduction Surgery Risks

Every surgery has some risks. The risks with male breast reduction to treat gynecomastia are very rare, but they do occur.

Complications include those that can occur with any surgery, such as an allergic reaction to the anesthetic, infection or other medical problems, but also can include complications related to your satisfaction with the results.

One specific risk of male breast reduction surgery is the loss of sensitivity to the nipples. Usually, sensation in the nipples will be lost for a few weeks to a month after breast tissue has been removed. However, there is the chance that this loss of feeling may be permanent.

General Gynecomastia Surgery Risks and Complications

A bad reaction to anesthesia can occur during any surgical procedure. Even if you have never had a problem with anesthesia, there is the chance you may have one.

Postoperative bleeding or infection can also occur with gynecomastia surgery. In addition, a blood clot called a hematoma can occur in the treated area, as can a seroma, a pocket of watery fluid.

Necrosis, or tissue death, can occur when the blood supply to skin or other tissues is cut off. Necrosis can be a serious problem that must be treated immediately.

Irregular Contour Deformities

Although not physically harmful, one of the major problems after liposuction is the formation of contour irregularities. These are dents, bumps and waves that are visible in the area treated with liposuction and can be unattractive. If the irregularities are severe, you might need further liposuction to smooth them out.

General Dissatisfaction with Gynecomastia Correction Surgery

Lastly, you may be unhappy with how you look after your surgery. You may feel that not enough tissue was removed or that you were left with too much scarring. To help prevent your being dissatisfied with the results, speak with your surgeon before your procedure about how you want to look afterward.
