Board certification is a voluntary process through which doctors and cosmetic plastic surgeons in a variety of specialties agree to undergo testing and peer evaluation.  There are many medical specialty boards that evaluate and test physicians and surgeons in their respective specialties. Through this process, a doctor's skills, background, training, and performance are evaluated by other doctors in the same area of medicine.  Doctors who fulfill the criteria are certified by the medical specialty board.

The criterion for certification varies from board to board, but almost all require a medical degree, residency training, specialty training, a medical license, and more.  To maintain board certification, a doctor must continue his or her training in a specific field and undergo additional reviews every six to ten years.

Unlike a medical license, board certification isn't required to practice medicine, but because it's based on reviews by other board-certified doctors, it's considered the gold standard when it comes to determining a cosmetic surgeon's qualifications.
