Male Cosmetic Surgery Overview
Cosmetic surgery for men has become increasingly common, due in part to the enduring emphasis on youthful appearances in the business world, as well as to the advancements made in various techniques to combat physical flaws and signs of aging. While certain procedures may be covered by health insurance plans when they've prescribed as medically necessary, most male cosmetic surgery procedures are usually considered "elective" surgery and therefore aren? covered. However, men who want to enhance their appearance can find affordable financing for their procedures.

There are a wide variety of cosmetic procedures available to men today, from liposuction and facial implants to eyelifts, tummy tucks and more. Two of the more common procedures are breast reduction surgery and face lifts.
Some men have a condition called gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement. When the size of the male breasts can be reduced through diet, the condition can be treated through liposuction (when the breast enlargement is simply the result of fatty tissue) or breast reduction surgery.
In male breast reduction surgery, the surgeon makes an incision along the lower outside edge of the areola. The surgeon then removes excess tissue from the area below the areola, reshapes the breast, and sutures the skin. The nipples usually remain attached to their blood vessels and nerves, which helps to maintain their sensitivity to touch. For certain patients with extremely large breasts, however, the surgeon may need to reposition the nipples and areola, which can result in a loss of sensation in the nipple and areola. As noted earlier, for patients whose breast size is caused solely by excessive fat tissue, the surgeon can sometimes reduce the size with liposuction alone, which minimizes the risks of scarring and loss of sensitivity.
Male breast reduction surgery can be performed in a hospital, outpatient surgery center, or office-based surgical suite. In most cases, the patient will be sedated with general anesthesia. The surgery usually lasts between one and two hours.
After surgery, most patients experience swelling, bruises, and tenderness in their chests for a few days or more. Most patients can get back to work in one to three days. Part of the overall process, but particularly the recovery process and particularly for teenaged boys who've had the surgery, may involve addressing the psychological aspects of gynecomastia.
Facelift surgery, or rhytidectomy, is a procedure designed to correct sagging facial skin, jowls, and/or extra neck skin. The patient receives general anesthesia or local anesthesia and IV sedation. Once the patient is sedated, the surgeon makes an incision, starting above the ear, curling around the ear and extending to the hairline at the bottom of the neck. Next, the surgeon separates the skin from the tissue beneath it and pulls the skin up to flatten any creases and wrinkles. The surgeon then removes any excess skin before suturing up the incision.
Facelift surgery can last several hours, but in most cases, the patient can go home the same day. Patients generally experience a couple weeks of bruising, soreness, swelling, and numbness, but they're usually back to work and performing their regular activities in about two weeks. The results of facelift surgery can last five to ten years.
It should be noted that, depending upon the exact nature of the lift, though, some men may need to begin shaving in new spots (further along the neck behind the ear, for instance). Also, men with receding hairlines may run the risk of having their incision scars become more and more visible over time.
