Every procedure carries a certain amount of risk, even relatively simple procedures like dermabrasion, acid peels and Thermage®. General risks involved in these skin treatment procedures include redness or swelling in the treated area, although these symptoms usually resolve within 24 hours. Additional risks can arise if the procedure is performed in a non-medical facility and/or if the equipment being used isn't properly sterilized.
Less common risks typically involve the specific medical conditions of the client undergoing treatment. For instance, microdermabrasion should not be performed on individuals who have undiagnosed lesions, warts, a recent outbreak of herpes, stage 3 or 4 acne or other specific conditions. The client can minimize or eliminate such risks by sharing his or her complete medical history with the doctor before beginning any treatment.
Candidates for any procedure, including skin treatments, are therefore urged to discuss the possibility of all risks involved with their physician prior to scheduling a procedure. This will help the individual weigh the benefits versus the risks and make an informed decision about the procedure.
