Usually, the patient will be up and about within a few hours of otoplasty surgery. A young child may be kept in the hospital overnight until the general anesthesia has completely worn off. His or her ears will hurt for a few days after cosmetic ear surgery, but this can usually be dealt with using over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. The bulky bandages will be removed after a few days, but smaller dressings may be left on the ears, especially at night, for a few days longer.
Although children may return to school after about a week following otoplasty, they should not take part in any activities that could result in trauma to the ear, such as team sports or playground activities, for at least a month.
