Types of Laser Hair Removal

There are several types of laser hair removal. This is the same as saying that there are several types of lasers used in permanently removing hair since many of the systems are defined by the laser being used.

All types of laser hair removal work by damaging the hair follicles, the organs in the skin that contain the hair roots and manufacture the hair. The light from the laser passes through the surface of the skin to the hair follicle and is absorbed by the darker follicle, heating it to damage or destroy it without harming the skin tissue around it. Most hair growth in the treatment area will be inhibited for some time.

The choice of which type of laser is best for you depends on your hair color and your skin color. Different lasers emit laser beams in different wavelengths of light and different wavelengths of light are absorbed by different colors. The laser light must be absorbed by the hair follicle and not by the surrounding skin to be effective and safe. The paler the skin and the darker the hair; the better the results are with laser hair removal. Someone with pale skin, whose hair follicles are dark by comparison, can get good results from pretty much any type of laser. Someone with darker skin may do better with a diode laser system or an intense pulsed light (IPL) system. However, a person with very dark skin may not benefit much from laser hair removal.
